Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore

Mr. Penumbra’s* 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan

Strange things are afoot at Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. Clay
Jannon, an out-of-work website designer, takes a job at Mr. Penumbra’s
24-hour bookstore. Almost no one buys anything, but repeat customers
borrow strange books full of codes. Why? Jannon and friends: a special
effects designer, a google queen, a VC friend from childhood and
Dungeons and Dragons wizard, and Oliver Grone archaeology grad student
try to solve the mystery.

Robin Sloan’s adventure is for the tech age, and who can resist a glow-in-the-
dark book cover. Is this suspenseful story real or is it a fable at the intersection
of technology, books, observation and thought?

* Penumbra - definition: a space of partial illumination (as in an eclipse)
between the perfect shadow on all sides and the full light.
